Synopsis
From what I could gather from the 7 episodes I have watched. The story takes place in a post apocalyptic world, where mutated organisms known as “Aragami” have driven humanity to near extinction. With a natural instinct to adapt and devour everything in sight, the “Aragami” have become the top of the food chain, the God’s of the new world.
The only things stopping the “Aragami” are a specialized human force called the “God Eaters”. The “God Eaters” are humans with a unique gene that are able to wield the “God Arcs” designed to combat the “Aragami”.
Review
If you have ever read the manga, “Freezing”. The plotline and artstyle are pretty similar. The world is entering an apocalyptic era, where the human race is in danger of going into extinction. An organization develops a new technology to combat the problem. The problem is temporarily solved and then a new problem arises. Rinse and repeat.
This anime is pretty new and the storyline is pretty basic (as of episode 7). The protagonist of the story is a teenage male, Lenka Utsugi, just entering the force and learning the basics of becoming a “God Eater”. Then he is thrown into an array of action packed fight scenes. Where he quickly learns what it truly means to be a “God Eater”.
The anime is unique in a way that it goes straight into the story without any explanations. As you watch each episode the backstory unfolds in a form of flashbacks. Explaining how the current state of the world came to be. As for character development, there really hasn’t been any. With the exception of one character, starting near the end of episode 6 and only scratching the surface.
This may be the gamer in me, but I would also like to mention the team unit of the “God Eaters”. The fact that there are team tactical formations and actual strategy when fighting against the “Aragami”. Different combinations of ranged and melee units is super interesting to me. I would love to see more of this as larger “Aragami” start to appear.
I love the art style, it is similar to that of Attack on Titan or the Gundam series. Although some of the outfits are a little outrageous, each and every character in the story is unique. The action scenes are superb, however some of the fight scenes ... let’s just say some of the characters are made to look unbeatable, which is nothing new in an anime I guess.
There are a lot of questions that popped up in my head after watching the first 7 episodes of the anime. Only natural due to the nature of how the anime is set up to explain things through flashbacks. This is probably the main reason why I am still interested in this anime.
The only questionable scene in the anime (as of episode 7, within context of the plot), how does the protagonist, Lenka, survive getting punctured through his stomach? Other than his combat skills, no where in the anime has it been shown that he is extraordinary. When the boss monster literally skewers the protagonists through the torso. Lenka is able to get up, pick up another person, move (given that he doesn’t make it very far), falls off a cliff, drag a person to a random room 10-20 floors up, bandage them up, then collapse. Only to be fixed with a shot and some bandages. Hopefully this is answered in a future episode.
Overall
Action packed anime, which could or could not have a story. It is still too early to tell. Art style is great, decent fight scenes. Plot is similar to “Attack on Titan” and “Freezing”. Overall I would RECOMMEND this anime to anyone looking for a random shounen anime to watch.

God Eater
** Side note: Apparently God Eater is based on a existing video game.
Until next time,
